Choi Ik Joon, CEO of Allgorun Agricultural Corporation, presented a strategic direction for the domestic apple mango industry through an apple mango training session held at the Jangheung-gun Agricultural Technology Center in South Jeolla Province.

Choi noted that while interest in apple mango cultivation is rapidly increasing as it becomes known as a high-income crop, clear limitations exist if farmers fail to understand the underlying market structure. He explained that domestically produced apple mangoes currently operate within the same distribution system as imported products, yet insufficient supply makes it difficult to secure stable entry into large-scale retail channels. To address this challenge, he emphasized that regional-level cooperatives and organized production systems are essential.

“Until now, the focus has been on the Irwin variety and a limited number of Taiwanese varieties,” Choi said.

“Going forward, we need to expand consumer choice by introducing a wider range of apple mango cultivars that consumers can clearly perceive. Only then can true differentiation and premium pricing be achieved.”

Regarding facility investment, he added, “Apple mango is not a crop that requires heavy upfront investment from the outset,” noting that “a phased approach tailored to each farm’s circumstances can, in fact, provide a more stable starting point.”
