Choi Ik Joon, CEO of Allgorun Agricultural Corporation, emphasized the current state and future direction of the domestic apple mango industry during an apple mango training session held at the Jangheung-gun Agricultural Technology Center in South Jeolla Province.
On the day of the training, Choi Ik Joon, CEO of Allgorun Agricultural Corporation, went beyond simple cultivation techniques and focused his presentation on why the apple mango industry in Korea is still considered to be in its “early stage,” and what strategic approaches farmers should adopt moving forward.
He explained that while domestically produced apple mangoes are currently competing with imported products within the same distribution channels, domestic supply remains insufficient. As a result, there are structural limitations preventing Korean apple mangoes from becoming a “regular, year-round product” in department stores and large-scale retail channels. As a solution, he emphasized the importance of regional-level organization and cultivar strategies.
According to his analysis, moving away from the currently dominant Irwin variety and a limited number of Taiwanese varieties toward cultivars that offer distinctive taste, appearance, and storytelling that consumers can clearly perceive will become a core competitive advantage in the future apple mango market.
He also addressed the issue of facility investment, which many farmers view as a significant burden, delivering the message that “excessive investment from the outset is not necessarily the right answer.” By presenting realistic cultivation strategies—such as utilizing existing facilities or adopting a phased investment approach—he gained strong resonance from farmers in attendance.
